Strudel
Live-code music in your browser: the TidalCycles pattern language rebuilt in JavaScript โ free, no install, visuals included
Website: https://strudel.cc/ ยท Source: GitHub ยท Type: Open-source community project (part of the TidalCycles family)
Why it exists
Live coding music has always been a superpower locked behind environment setup: Haskell, SuperCollider, installation rituals. Strudel โ TidalCycles' pattern language reimagined for the browser โ removes every barrier: open a page, get a REPL with samples, synthesis, effects and a step-sequencing pattern system that would take days to wire up by hand. It's equal parts instrument, education tool and art form; the site's tutorials start at "hello world" and climb to polyrhythmic breakcore, and every lesson is audible rather than theoretical.
Main features
- Mini-notation patterns โ TidalCycles' signature
"bd sd [hh hh*2] cp"rhythm syntax, with tempo, cycles and time-correct looping. - Samples & synthesis โ a large built-in sample bank (drums, instruments, found sounds) plus sawtooth/square/sine synths and filters, all via Web Audio.
- Effects chain โ reverb, delay, distortion, filters, bitcrush, panning, envelopes โ composable per-pattern.
- Scales & harmony helpers โ notes, chords, scales and arpeggio helpers so musical theory is one function away.
- Visuals โ waveforms and pattern visualization rendered alongside the code; performance-friendly.
- REPL with tutorials โ editable, runnable examples embedded in the docs; Ctrl+Enter and you hear it.
- Ableton Link & MIDI โ jam with hardware/DAW setups from the browser.
Who it's for
- Musicians and producers curious about algorithmic patterns without buying into a DAW religion.
- Teachers who want to sneak math, rhythm and programming into one irresistible lesson.
- Algorave performers and creative coders who want a portable, zero-install instrument.
- JavaScript developers who'd enjoy hearing their day job.
How it compares
- TidalCycles (Haskell) โ the original and still more powerful; Strudel is its friendlier, browser-native sibling with the same pattern DNA.
- Sonic Pi โ the education classic for Ruby-friendly schools; Strudel needs zero installation and runs on a Chromebook.
- Gibber / FoxDot โ other live-coding environments; Strudel's mini-notation is the most concise pattern language of the lot.
- DAWs (Ableton & co.) โ infinite production power, heavyweight cost; Strudel is the sketchbook next to the studio.
Notes
- Everything runs locally in your browser (Web Audio); the editor state lives in the URL, so patterns are shareable as links.
- AGPL-3.0, backed by the TidalCycles community; active development and a friendly Discord.
- Great on headphones; audio APIs on iOS Safari are usable but a laptop is the reliable stage.
- Start with the interactive tutorial on the site โ ten minutes from zero to your first loop.
