Why it exists

OpenResume was created by Xitang Zhao (engineer) and Zhigang Wen (designer) as a weekend project. As immigrants to the U.S., both made many mistakes building their first résumés and applying for internships and jobs. Later, while mentoring first-generation college students and reviewing their résumés, they noticed students were repeating exactly the same mistakes: inconsistent bullet points, mismatched fonts, messy formatting after copy-pasting from templates. OpenResume is their answer — the best practices they had to learn the hard way are baked directly into the tool, so anyone can produce a polished, ATS-friendly résumé without knowing the unwritten rules.

What makes it different

Most resume builders target a global audience and drown you in options. OpenResume deliberately restricts your choices to align with U.S. hiring best practices:

  • No profile photo option — to avoid bias and discrimination.
  • Only the core sections — profile, work experience, education, skills — omitting noise like "references available upon request".
  • Single-column, top-down layout only — because single-column designs parse best in Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
  • Auto-formatting — consistent bullet points, font sizes and spacing by design, so formatting mistakes are impossible.

Main features

  • Resume Builder — live WYSIWYG preview with instant PDF download; three steps: add a PDF or start fresh, tweak the design, download and apply.
  • Resume Parser — upload an existing résumé PDF to test its ATS readability (what a machine sees when it reads your file). Works standalone, without building a new résumé.
  • Privacy-first architecture — no sign-up required; all data is stored locally in your browser, never on a server. You have complete control over your data.
  • Free forever — the project's stated belief is that everyone should have free access to a modern, professional résumé design.
  • ATS compatibility — designed to work well with top ATS platforms such as Greenhouse and Lever.
  • Self-hostable — the source is on GitHub and can be run on your own infrastructure (Docker).

Who it's for

  • Students and first-job seekers who don't know U.S. résumé conventions yet.
  • Anyone applying to U.S. companies that use ATS screening (Greenhouse, Lever, etc.).
  • Privacy-conscious users who don't want their résumé data uploaded to a third-party server.
  • People who want a great-looking résumé fast, with zero decisions about layout.

How it compares

ToolModelStandout trait
OpenResumeFree, open sourceOpinionated U.S. best practices, local-only data, parser
Reactive ResumeFree, open sourceMany templates, multilingual, richer customization
FlowCVFreemiumPolished templates, limited free tier
ZetyCommercialAI content suggestions, large example library, paid downloads

If you want total freedom and multi-language résumés, pick Reactive Resume. If you want a fool-proof résumé that follows U.S. conventions and never leaves your machine, pick OpenResume.

Notes

  • Built with React; runs entirely client-side for the builder (the parser is the only feature that needs a server round-trip when self-hosted).
  • Almost 9,000 stars on GitHub (October 2026) and a steady stream of praise from students and career centers.
