Why it exists

Before Notion charged you a subscription to store your thoughts in someone else's database, TiddlyWiki pioneered the opposite bet: your notebook is a file you own. Each note is a "tiddler" โ€” a small card with tags and wiki-text links โ€” and the whole apparatus (editing UI, search, plugins, your data) lives in one HTML file. Twenty-plus years in, it's still the purest local-first note-taking experience: it works from a USB stick, survives Format Wars, and will still open in a browser when every SaaS notebook of the 2020s has been sunset.

Main features

  • Non-linear structure โ€” atomic tiddlers instead of pages, linked and tagged into a personal web of knowledge.
  • Truly single-file โ€” the entire wiki (app + content) is one HTML file; it edits itself and saves back to disk.
  • WikiText & macros โ€” tables, images, transclusion, filters and user-definable macros make it close to a programming environment for notes.
  • Huge plugin ecosystem โ€” calendar, Kanban, KaTeX, code blocks, editors' toolkits, lots of customization.
  • Flexible storage โ€” standalone file, Node.js server with git-friendly storage, or read-only publishing of any file.
  • Everything searchable โ€” instant full-text search across all tiddlers, offline.

Who it's for

  • Writers, researchers and tinkerers who want lifelong notes in a format they fully control.
  • People keeping journals, project logs or lab notebooks on machines without cloud access.
  • Anyone escaping subscription note apps without losing linking, search and structure.

How it compares

  • Obsidian / Logseq โ€” local markdown file folders with slicker editing; heavier install, files-per-note structure instead of one portable file.
  • Notion / OneNote โ€” rich and collaborative, but cloud-bound and rentable.
  • Hister (in this library) โ€” indexes what you read; TiddlyWiki is where you write.
  • Bento (in this library) โ€” applies the same one-file philosophy to presentations.

Notes

  • Saving back to file uses the browser's download flow (or a small helper app / Node server for smooth saving) โ€” the only rough edge for newcomers.
  • The empty file is ~3 MB; plugins expand capabilities without touching the core.
  • v5.4.x is the current generation; the format has stayed backwards-compatible for a decade, and old files simply open.
