Nomic's open-source desktop chatbot: private local LLMs on Windows, macOS and Linux with LocalDocs chat β no cloud, no data leaves your machine

Why it exists
In early 2023, "talk to an AI about my private documents" meant uploading them to a third party. GPT4All was the project that made the local alternative boring and dependable: one installer for Windows/macOS/Linux, a curated catalog of quantized open models, and a clean chat UI β plus LocalDocs, which indexes your folders into a private, local retrieval layer so the model can answer from your PDFs and notes without any of it leaving the disk. It's the least dramatic, most "it just works" entry in the local-AI field, which is precisely its charm.
Main features
- Local model catalog β download and run thousands of GGUF open models (Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Falconβ¦) with hardware-aware recommendations.
- 100% offline β no internet required after the model download; no account, no telemetry requirements, no cloud round-trips.
- LocalDocs (private RAG) β chat with your documents via local embeddings and retrieval; folder-level, rescan-able, entirely on-device.
- Cross-platform β Windows x64 & ARM, macOS, Ubuntu β one of the few local-AI apps with a first-class Windows story.
- Customization β system prompts, temperature, context length per model; chat templates preserved per assistant.
- OpenAI-compatible local server β serve local models to other apps over a localhost API.
- Enterprise mode β remote deployment and management options for organizations.
Who it's for
- Windows users β the local-AI scene skews Mac-first, and GPT4All's Windows/ARM builds are a real advantage.
- Anyone wanting a dead-simple, set-and-forget local assistant without Docker or terminals.
- People chatting against private documents (LocalDocs) under NDAs, in healthcare, law or research.
- Teams evaluating a self-hosted AI rollout before buying anything.
How it compares
- Jan β the actively developed, more extensible open-source desktop (GPT4All's repo has been quiet since mid-2025); Jan and GPT4All share the "open, local, offline" DNA.
- Msty β closed-source but more polished UI with branching/split chats; GPT4All wins on license and Windows ARM support.
- Dot β macOS-only document-chat specialist; GPT4All is the general assistant.
- Ollama + anything β more flexible for developers, zero GUI; GPT4All is the "give it to your parents" edition of the same idea.
Notes
- Development has slowed notably (the main repo saw little activity through 2025β2026); the app remains stable and useful, but if you want fast-moving features, compare with Jan first.
- Model quality is bounded by what fits your RAM β 7β8B models are the sweet spot on ordinary laptops.
- LocalDocs indexing quality is good for personal-document Q&A; don't expect enterprise-RAG sophistication.
- MIT-licensed, including the model-training stack β one of the cleanest licenses in the field.
